Varicose Veins and Endovenous laser treatment

What are varicose veins?

Veins are the blood vessels that channel blood back from the extremities to the heart. They contain one-way valves to ensure that blood flows in the correct direction. When veins become stretched, or the valves fail, blood no longer flows properly. The veins in the legs, just under the surface of the skin then become visible varicose veins. Varicose veins can appear as tiny ‘thread veins’ on the skin. Later they can dilate and become tortuous, unsightly bulging veins. Varicose veins are progressive. If left untreated, they can progress to cause skin damage near the ankle, including pigmentation of the skin and sometimes ulceration, which can be very difficult to treat.

Varicose veins have been around for a long time – the first known depiction of a person with a varicose vein is in an Ancient Egyptian picture from 4,500 years ago!
